High Availability IT Infrastructure for Leading Explosives Manufacturer

Challenge

Our customer is one of the largest manufacturers of Explosives and Initiating Systems in the world. It supplies a complete range of explosives, detonators, and components for use in the mining, infrastructure and construction industries. The company also manufactures high-energy explosives, delivery systems, ammunition filling, and pyros fuses for the defence sector. Today, our customer has a global footprint in 82 countries and has 40 manufacturing facilities across 9 countries.

But it was not always this big.

In its early days, our customer had a plethora of standalone infrastructure components with limited resilience and availability. While that suited the company’s needs at that size, it soon fell short when its geographical presence expanded and revenues exploded. As a result, it looked for an entire revamp of its IT infrastructure. Impressed with the depth of our solution architecting expertise and breath of experience of supplying and supporting SAP infrastructure, the company selected Unique Solutions.

Solution

Our solution comprised HPE servers, StoreOnce and Alletra storage units. By implementing an Active:Passive hot standby architecture, we took the high availability of the company’s infrastructure stack to the next level. The infra was also designed to maximize data protection such as immutability of backups. In addition to supplying and installing the infrastructure, we set up a datacenter with Smart Racks.

Outcome

Being in the regulated space, the company is subject to regulations around airgapping of its servers and storage. We provided a comprehensive solution to fulfil this compliance requirement.
